My journey towards becoming a therapist

Hi, I'm Ricquel. I'm a Trauma-informed Integrative Counsellor & Psychotherapist working with clients with depression and anxiety, and specialising in working with female survivors of sexual violence. My goal is to help you process your emotions and encourage you towards healing and transformation.

I’m no different from you, or any of the clients I see. I have had both high and low moments in my life, and living through tough experiences has shaped who I am today and how I help others.

As a teen and young adult, I struggled to process pain from my past and experienced my own mental health issues, so I understand how debilitating and pervasive the impacts of emotional trauma can be. My struggles have helped me to identify with and hold space for other people's pain on a deep, empathetic level and I truly believe that therapy can bring healing and positive change into your life because it has done for me.

Being a therapist is more than a job to me, it’s my vocation, and the fulfilment of a lifelong dream I’ve had since first watching the TV show Frasier as a 9-year-old. I was fascinated by the TV psychiatrist’s role of giving advice to worried callers on his radio talk show, and thus my passion for psychology was born. I’ve always had a natural affinity for those who are suffering and felt drawn towards uplifting the underdog. Through my work, I’m able to help people appreciate what they have been through, so they can transform any negative self-perception created by the times they were surviving adversity.

Being a therapist truly is an honour. I love creating a space for people to share their innermost thoughts and feelings, with the assurance they will be seen, heard and validated. The most rewarding thing about being a therapist is seeing your clients walk away feeling better about themselves, free of burdens and knowing they are worthy of living the life they deserve.

I have compassion for people and bring warmth and empathy to sessions

I have a natural ability to:

Help people identify what they are feeling

Listen to and reflect people’s underlying feelings

Educate people about the impacts of trauma in a relatable way

Help people make sense of what happened in their past, and how it impacts them now

Be a witness to people’s emotional pain and help guide them through it

Acknowledge a person’s strengths and validate their ways of surviving
